Position: Lighthouse Front Desk Assistant
General Responsibilities:
Arrive 15 minutes before the start of service; stay to assist with clean up after class (15-20 minutes following service) to
· Greet and guide
· Support classroom flow
· Support behavior management
· Provide Snacks; and
· Wrap up

l Check the building to see who's there, and as you do: o Check calendar: which classes start in sanctuary o Ask teachers and Director about any projects, snack directions or other special needs. o Distribute classroom notebooks to classrooms |

Greet & Guide

o Greet people who come into the Lighthouse. |
|
Traffic Control |
o Provide direction to classes as needed. o Make sure people don’t stop in intersections or halls. |
|

Give newcomers a good first contact. |
o
Give
them information on the program o Help them select appropriate class. o Walk them to the class and introduce to the teacher. o Get contact information from them before parent leaves for worship. |

|
Support classroom flow
always, throughout class time |
o At least once, look in on each class. o Count # children for snack o Give teaching assistant “this week in class” page o Post completed page at class door before parents arrive. o Provide assistance if requested by teachers o Be aware of children leaving classes; take needed action |

Support behavior management

When children need a time out to regain calm and choose to be part of class again |
If teacher is having classroom management problems, o Meet the child where he/ she is, without judgment or emotion; o Take charge of the situation by giving them a role; and o Help them get ready and encourage them back into the classroom. (In other words when they are calm give them the most boring job you can think of or the option of heading back to class). o If they cannot calm down, demonstrate calm as you take the next action: taking the child to his/her parent (ask the Director to intervene if needed). |

Provide Snacks

Prepare and serve snacks |
One tray per class. On each tray, put: o Beverages: one cup/child, filled (can be water). o Basket or container of snacks to share. o Napkins or paper plates for children to eat off of. Put snack on side of classroom, out of reach of children, or where requested by teacher. |

Wrap up
At and after end of class |
Clean up |
o Clean snack supplies (cups, trays) o Wash dishes, load dishwasher, wipe down counters o Straighten front desk |

Attendance |
o Collect classroom notebooks from classrooms o Tally information in binder o Take totals to fill in chart on church office bulletin board |

|
Optional project
support |
o Take photos of the children participating in the classroom o Check the supply closet. Ensure things are in order (see map on supply closet door.) o Update bulletin boards or other projects; check with Director |
