A Guide to Lay Leadership
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors has legal and fiduciary responsibility for the church. It provides leadership, creates a budget, and sets policies for the church.
Administrative Committees
The Nominating Committee nominates candidates for elected church offices.
The Finance Committee oversees and promotes the church’s financial well-being.
The Canvass Committee plans and organizes the church’s annual canvass during which members are asked to make a financial pledge to the church.
The Auction Committee plans and organizes the church’s annual spring auction.
The Endowment Committee promotes and manages the church’s endowment.
The Personnel Committee researches and makes recommendations regarding issues such as staff hiring, compensation, and benefits as well as policies regarding staff.
The Building and Grounds Committee plans and organizes the maintenance, repair, and improvement of our buildings and grounds.
The Aesthetics Committee is responsible for interior decoration of our facilities.
The Labyrinth Task Force is planning and organizing the construction of a labyrinth in our Memorial Garden.
The Electronic Communications Committee maintains, updates, and improves the church’s website, its e-mail lists, and its computer systems.
The Archives Committee maintains, organizes, and updates the church’s historical records.
The Long Range Planning Committee researches and makes recommendations regarding the church’s future needs for organizational development, staff, facilities, and programming.
The Denominational Affairs Committee coordinates the church’s participation with the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Pacific Northwest District of the UUA, and the Puget Sound Council.
Program Committees
The Outreach Committee works to make the church visible, identifiable, and well-known in the wider community.
The Cable TV Committee records and edits worship services for broadcast on local public access cable television.
The Membership Committee works with the membership/volunteer coordinator to welcome visitors and integrate new members into the life of the congregation.
The Worship Committee works with the minister to plan and organize worship services.
The Music Committee works with the music director to plan music for Sunday morning services and other church events.
The Adult Religious Education Committee plans adult religious education classes for the congregation.
The Chalice Circle Committee plans and organizes participation in Chalice Circles.
The Hospitality Committee is responsible for the church’s kitchen and for providing food and refreshments after for Sunday mornings and at other church events.
The Caring Committee plans and organizes support for church members in need of help because of illness, accidents, or other life transitions.
The Lay Ministers work with the minister to provide pastoral care to individuals who are in crisis or experiencing a life transition.
The Retreat Committee plans and organizes the church’s annual weekend retreat.
The Social Justice Committee and its subcommittees, such as the Hospitality House Committee and the Microbank Committee, plan and organize the congregation’s participation in local, national, and worldwide social justice activities.
The Chilrdens Religious Education Committee works with the Director of Family Ministries to plan and organize programming for children, youth, and families on Sunday mornings.
