Job Description for the Projectionist

(Revised April 13, 2007)

Setting up

  1. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the first service begins. It is recommended you arrive earlier if this is your first time to set up the projector.
  2. Unlock the white equipment cabinet. If you don’t know where the keys to it are, ask somebody.
  3. Take the white empty power strip from the equipment cabinet and put it on the floor.
  4. Turn on the power on all three power strips, the two inside the cabinet and the one on the floor. Do this by flipping their toggle switches. When you do this, you should see the lights on the sound board in the equipment cabinet light up.
  5. Take the laptop computer out of the equipment cabinet. Put it on the table. Plug the laptop computer into the white power strip.
  6. Get the external memory stick out of Mailbox #37 across from the church administrator’s desk in the office. Plug this disk drive into the USB port on the left side of the computer.
  7. The “Sunday Services” folder should open automatically on the screen. If it doesn’t, double-left-click the “Sunday Services” icon in the middle of the screen. Then double-left-click the file with today’s date on it. This will open a PowerPoint file.
  8. Change PowerPoint from “normal mode” to “presentation” by pressing the F5 key on the top row of the keyboard.
  9. Pull down the screen in the front of the sanctuary and attach the clip on the screen’s chain to the bolt in the wall.
  10. Plug in the projector’s power cord. The projector’s power cord is tucked underneath the equipment cabinet. Plug it into the power strip on the floor. If you’ve done this correctly, a green light and an orange light will light up on the projector.
  11. Plug in the 15-pin video cable, which is also tucked under the equipment cabinet, into the 15-pin video port on the left side of the laptop. Be careful! This cable is rather short.
  12. Take the projector’s remote control out of the clear plastic box in the equipment cabinet and turn on the projector’s lamp. Do this by pointing the remote control at the projector and pressing the ON button for at least two seconds. If you do this correctly, the orange light on the projector will go off and, if the sanctuary is quiet, you will hear the projector begin to whir. Within a minute, a blue square will appear on the screen. Don’t worry yet that the image is distorted.
  13. Project the laptop screen image onto the projection screen. Do this by hitting the  FN key (on the lower left-hand corner of the keyboard) and the F4 key (on the top row of the keyboard) at the same time.
  14. Adjust the picture on the screen. To do this, hit the 3D Reform button on the remote control twice or until you see the horizontal and vertical control screen appear on the projection screen. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to switch between the horizontal and vertical controls. Set the horizontal adjustment to “-15.” Leave the Vertical adjustment at “0.” Be patient. This remote is responds more  slowly than others you may be used to. Hit the 3D Reform button again to access the cornerstone control screen. Use the arrow keys and the enter key to adjust the corners.

Running the Slide Show

  1. Run through the slide show quickly by yourself before the service starts to familiarize yourself with it.
  2. You must manually advance the slides for most of the slide show. To advance the slides use the right arrow key on the on the bottom right hand corner of the keyboard. If you make a mistake, use the left arrow key to go back.
  3. The announcements, however, are on an automatic timer. When you see the slide that says, “This Week’s Annoucements,” click the right arrow once and the slides will advance automatically on a 10-second timer. If a slide does seem to get stuck,            however, hit the right arrow key to advance it.
  4. Use the “PIC MUTE” button on the remote control to temporarily turn off the lamp during parts of the service when no image is required.
  5. At the end of the first service, hit the “PIC MUTE” button and leave everything else the way it is.

Putting Things Away

The orange light on the projector will start to flash, signaling that the projector is going through the cool down process. DON’T DO ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL THIS ORANGE LIGHT STOPS FLASHING. This should take about 90 seconds. After about 90 seconds, you’ll see steady green and orange lights on the projector and it’s now safe to proceed.
  2. Close down all open windows on the laptop computer and turn off the computer. To do this, click the start icon on the lower-left-hand corner of the screen. Click “Turn off the computer.” Click “Turn off the computer” again. Wait for the computer to shut down.
