CONSTRUCTION
OF DIMIAO NATURE RESERVE PROJECT:
The coastal
environment of the town of Dimiao is being severely
degraded. In early 2002, Dimiao's coastal
communities conducted a coastal resource assessment.
The assessment identified several factors degrading
the environment: 1) lack of livelihood activities;
2) waste dumping; 3) depleting fish resources; 4)
sand extraction; and 5) illegal fishing, often with
cyanide. The community realized that livelihood
activities and environmental education were the key
factors in eliminating these problems. Thus, the
community is working to establish an environmental
education center, shark-watching platform, and
walkway through mangroves. The walkway will be
raised to reduce impact on the environment, allow
for better viewing of fish and invertebrates, and
provide easy access during high tide. The
shark-watching platform will facilitate the viewing
of flocks of wild ducks, schools of fish that pass
by, and black-tip sharks at high tide.
