Classes and Curricula for the 2008-2009 Church Year

Many of the classes meeting at 9:30 a.m. will focus on "Discovering the World Religions." Classes meeting at 11 a.m. will focus on "Creation and Creativity."

At 9:30 a.m.

Nursery (birth - 3½ years): Faith development starts at a subliminal, pre-language level as our youngest children are encouraged to feel safe and happy in their church home.  Here in the sunny nursery, children progress through the steps of short time separation from parents to establishing friendships.  They are encouraged to reach out, to explore, to appreciate and to affirm themselves.  Lessons of faith, trust, and love are given and received every Sunday, in actions as well as words.
Discovery (for 3 to 5-year-olds): This class will be “Celebrating Me and My World”. This full-year curriculum celebrates the wondrous qualities of children and the animals, objects, and people around them. It provides preschoolers with experiences and opportunities to grow in trust and caring and to develop their self-identity and sense of connectedness with all life.

Wumps (Kindergarten - 2nd grade): Picture Book World Religions” allows young children to explore the differences and similarities of world religions. Each week a beautiful picture book introduces the children to Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism in a gentle and respectful way. Additionally we will be using lessons from “Holidays and Holy Days” (See the Explorers class description).

Explorers (3
rd -5th grade): We’ll celebrate “Holidays and Holy Days.”  This course offers children a way to learn and celebrate special holy days from around the world through stories, food, music and movement. We will tie in our Unitarian Universalist principles with all the holidays, and compare and contrast the many theological beliefs and ideas the children will be exposed to.

Junior Youth (6th -8th grade): We will explore “Neighboring Faiths.” This Unitarian Universalist curriculum explores the history and development of different faith traditions. The youth will plan their own program by choosing which religious groups to learn about, visit and relate to their own growing faith.

Senior Youth (9th -12th grade): The Youth Group works with adult advisors to plan programs which include personal sharing, discussion of religious and ethical issues, guest speakers from other religions and from the community, service projects, participation in district youth conferences, and worship. Curriculum this year will focus on the variety of ways different religions answer life’s big questions.

At 11 a.m.

Spirit Play (preschool- 3rd grade): Based on the Montessori method, and drawing on a “morning-as-worship” model, “Spirit Play” embraces self-directed learning, multiple learning styles, cooperation and respect within a classroom community.  Through story, wondering, and creative art response, children make meaning of the language of our faith and life’s questions. This year’s program will focus on stories of creation from different parts of the world and from science.

Creativity Club (4th-8th grade): You The Creator” is a program of creative empowerment. It stresses the importance of supporting and affirming each other's creative abilities and connection to the creative power of the universe. All themes emphasize a connection to religious thinking, especially the Unitarian Universalist Principles and purposes.  We’ll start the year with a focus on Lego robots and then choose additional topics of interest to the participants and their teachers.
